Humanism has meant different things to different people, from the ancient Greeks and Chinese, to modern Europeans and indigenous Americans. There also have been both religious and secular versions of humanism and anti-humanism. Kit Christensen, PhD, will discuss some of these different conceptions of humanism that have been advocated, and criticized, in various intellectual traditions around the world, as well as their relevance today. Christensen teaches philosophy at Bemidji State University and is the author of several books, most recently Nonviolence, Peace, and Justice: A Philosophical Introduction.

February 12th Economic Justice:
The Occupy Wall Street movement arose due to frustration on the part of the many people hurt by the Great Recession. At the core of those frustrations is the large increase in income inequality in the last 30 years. Paul Kivi will share his research on economic justice and the collapse of the social contract in the United States, and how we can get shared benefits as well as shared sacrifice.

February 26th Reason, Spirit and the Brain:
Recent work in neuroscience gives us new insight into the relationships between spiritual practices, reason and the brain. Marsha Driscoll, PhD, professor of Psychology at Bemidji State, presents on the findings of current research regarding these connections.
